R.I.P Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse Crime Scene
I hate the New York Post. While hate is a strong word, it doesn’t adequately convey my true feelings. So allow me to rephrase–I deeply abhor the sloppily unethical, salacious, trash they publish and try to pass off as news. To take this one step further, I seriously wish they would go out of business.
Amy Winehouse, the beehived soul-jazz diva whose self-destructive habits were as well-publicized as her distinctive musical talent, was found dead in her London home, on July 23, 2011. In the case of Amy Winehouse, a talented jazz singer, she died from acute alcohol poisoning, because ethanol was the only psychoactive drug identified in postmortem blood.
Summary of Autopsy Report for Diana, Princess of Wales On August 30, 2007, CBS Evening News obtained a copy of Spencers 40-page autopsy report and ran a television piece titled, 'Was there time to save Diana? New revelations on the 10th anniversary of Princess death raise questions'. LONDON - JUNE 27: Amy Winehouse performs during the 46664 concert in celebration of Nelson Mandela's life at Hyde Park on June 27, 2008 in London, England.
Over the past few years many quality newspapers have crumbled under economic constraints. So I can’t seem to understand why this unscrupulous tabloid still stands to make a profit. Could this possibly be a reflection of a society that devours scandal and lies, but strays away from informative and principled news coverage? Actually—pardon my digression, that question is another topic all together.

What fueled my anger was the New York Post’s cover story about the death of singer Amy Winehouse. She was found dead on July 23 2011, in her apartment in London. The headline (as pictured to the right) was disrespectful and tasteless. Today, there still has not been confirmation that she died of an overdose. So much for truth because what this headline insinuates is a lie. What makes matters worse is that this front page was seen by over 500,000 readers.

Then again, I can’t be surprised. I already knew that the Post was a despicable publication. I knew this back when they published that disgustingly racist cartoon about President Obama. In case you don’t remember, CLICK HERE to view.
So while I won’t waste anymore time writing about the nonsensical and immoral tactics of the Post, I must say that I’m just plain tired of people making cruel remarks about Amy. She cannot defend herself from the casket. She cannot respond to the ignoramus onlookers who think they know about her life but only saw her on a video, television or at best in concert.
In my mind, that is not enough knowledge to have an opinion.
But, I am aware that everyone is entitled to an opinion (regardless of how insensitive, off based, cruel or ignorant that opinion may be). No, Amy Winehouse was not the best of role models and she definitely made songs that highlighted her struggle with drugs and alcohol. But these things don’t make her any less of a daughter, sister, or loved one. Despite the path one choses in life, why is it so hard for some people to have respect for the dead?
The reality of it is, insolence is not going anywhere. In death, there are those who have decency and a compassion when life is lost. Then, there are the vultures who prey on the dead. These scavengers (much like the New York Post) feed off the deceased with a hunger for negativity.
Nonetheless, I’m saddened by Amy Winehouse’s death. She was only 27. Her talent was undeniable and her music will undoubtedly live on. I send condolences to her friends and family.
